Red Squirrel Conservation: Strategies and Science 2025 – A Landmark Collection of Case Studies Showcasing UK Efforts
The third edition in a series of books, Red Squirrel Conservation: Strategies and Science has been released, highlighting the dedication, innovation, and collaborative spirit driving the recovery of one of the UK’s most iconic native species.
This new volume brings together case studies from across the country, spanning national partnerships, volunteer-led initiatives, and ground-breaking scientific research. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the diverse approaches contributing to red squirrel recovery and sustainable management.
Serving as both a reference and an inspiration, the collection provides an honest account of conservation in action—sharing successes, lessons learned, and the challenges that remain. With a light-touch editorial approach, contributors were given the freedom to tell their stories in their own words, ensuring an authentic reflection of the wide-ranging efforts across the UK.
“This volume not only captures the progress we’ve made in red squirrel conservation but also the creativity and resilience of those working tirelessly in the field,” said the editorial team. “We hope these case studies will guide future strategy and encourage even more people to become involved in red squirrel recovery.”
The publication was made possible with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Red Squirrels Trust Wales, Natural Resources Wales, and the Clocaenog Red Squirrel Trust. Funding was provided as part of the Magical Mammals project—a five-year initiative dedicated to forest mammal conservation, creating volunteering opportunities, and fostering public well-being through inclusive engagement.
Red Squirrel Conservation: Strategies and Science 2025 stands as a testament to the collective effort, passion, and vision behind safeguarding the future of the UK’s red squirrels.
